Ontario increases cannabis store licensing to 120 per month

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has continued working with the Government of Ontario to increase cannabis Retail Store Authorizations (RSAs) to 120 per month.

Applications

According to the regulator, the received applications were more than 1,630 for cannabis stores to date, and issued RSAs to 489 locations. It will take almost seven months to cover the backlog with this decision. Ontario crossed 100 store licenses in June last year and has increased only recently to match that of Alberta, which has 573 licensed cannabis stores. It was the third time the AGCO made such an announcement to increase the pace of cannabis store approvals.

Previous Announcements

For the first time, the announcement for speeding up the license was made on September 1 to almost 40 Ontario cannabis stores per month. The following statement was again in December; the decision was to provide licenses to the 80 stores per month. 82.9 million Canadian dollars were purchased by the AGCO, worth of regulated recreational cannabis in November 2020.
